Alton scored 40 out of 40 in East Hampshire’s Settlement Hierarchy, revised in 2018. This set out that “a settlement hierarchy can be used to inform a series of options for a local plan’s spatial strategy, to promote a sustainable pattern of development by encouraging close links between housing, jobs and services.”
Alton is the Market Town for East Hampshire and is well served by transport links including the A31, a mainline railway station on the line to London Waterloo and various bus routes.
The site is located on the western edge of Alton and connected via Chawton Park Road which runs through the site eventually turning into Chawton Bridleway 2 and also route 224 of the National Cycle Network. The site consists of ten fields of rough grassland / pasture which are framed by mature and ancient woodland sitting within the Chawton Park valley.
Harrow Estates considers a landscape led approach is most appropriate for the site and a Landscape and Visual Appraisal has beenundertaken to inform its considerations for how best to approach proposals for developing the site.
The historic core of Chawton Park including the Farmhouse, which is Grade II listed and contains various other historic farm buildings and mature trees, provides an opportunity to integrate high-quality development within the historic parkland setting.
